Augmented Reality: Picking and sequencing with Google Glass

Google Glass is the brand name of a miniature computer with an optical display in the form of eyeglasses. As well as showing information on the display, information can also be accessed from the internet. Glass at Work is the name of the program in which a handful of selected Google partners make augmented reality usable for their daily work processes and develop it further. While virtual reality is a self-contained world that does not have to have anything to do with our reality, augmented reality enriches reality with context-related additional information. Everyone knows this from a televised football match in which a virtual line is projected on the playing field before some free kicks in order to clearly demonstrate the distance to the goal.

At Schnellecke, Google Glass is used to support the picking and sequencing processes in the module assembly. Since 2015, Schnellecke has been using the data glasses, initially experimentally in Wolfsburg but meanwhile at several additional company sites around the world. The employees who work with Google Glass receive step-by-step work instructions superimposed directly in their field of vision. Thanks to free hands and flexible workflows, the process is accelerated considerably and the error rate is decreased.

xBand as supplement to Google Glass

In an additional step, the multi-order picking for kitting bins has been supplemented by an RFID-based removal recognition in connection with Google Glass. In addition to the glasses, the Ubimax xBand supports the work process. RFID technology supports the picking identification when components are removed from a box. If the worker reaches into the right box, which is also labeled with an RFID tag, at the appropriate time, the process step is confirmed. These innovative solutions make the work process more efficient, faster, and more reliable.
